The school visit: The top 24 questions to ask

September 05, 2018

School hunting for the perfect school for your student can be a fun adventure, but with so many choices in the area, which school is best for you? What questions are you going to ask and what are you looking for?

The number of choices available today can make this decision seem complicated. Chances are, your child has many more options of schools to attend than you did growing up. Many areas have local neighborhood public schools, private schools, charter schools, and magnet schools. Knowing where to find out information about these schools can help your family make a good choice.

Attending open houses and new parent nights can be a great place to start to learn about a school, but they often do not give a complete picture. Teachers and staff have prepared to give a good impression to the public at these events. You see what teachers and staff are most proud of.

You need a way to evaluate each school in order to test each school's climate, teaching dynamics, student engagement, safety and security, communication, parent involvement, and more.

The best way to get all these answers will be to take a school tour, meet with students and teachers, speak with current parents, and meet with the principal or head of school during a school day.

We have designed a free booklet that can be printed and taken to elementary and middles schools while evaluating a new school home for your child.
